Sam and Football
In the letter below, I introduce myself to my professor, Malcolm Campbell.

Dear Malcolm Letter
Sam Drummond
Dear Malcolm,
My name is Samuel Elliott Drummond, but I am called many different names including Sam, Sma, Sammy D, Sambo, and just about anything that has the letters “S”, “A”, and “M” in it. I’m mostly called Sam, but you may use whatever name you like the best.
I come from a small town in Western North Carolina known as Black Mountain. It’s about 15 miles east of the “big city” of Asheville. Around 800 students attend my high school on any typical day. Why did I choose to come to UNCC with 28,000 students? First, my dream school of Clemson would have cost me 48 grand to attend per year, and second, I wanted the amenities that come with a big university.
I’m a very humble person and do not like to talk about my accomplishments, but I will do so for this assignment. My proudest accomplishment was graduating in the top 15 of my class while maintaining a social and athletic life, and being an active member at my church of First Presbyterian Asheville. During my high school career, I quarterbacked the varsity football team to the playoffs for three straight years, with the last year resulting in an undefeated regular season culminating in a heartbreaking loss in the 3rd round of the playoffs. I was also the starting pitcher for the varsity baseball team for three years until I unfortunately sprained my UCL in my throwing arm. While I am very proud of my athletic achievements, I am also very proud of my academic achievements. I’m a math nerd who loves numbers, hates reading, but loves to write. Math has always been my passion. I received multiple awards for math contests and scored a 5 on both my AP Calculus and Statistics exam.

I’m number 4 in the picture above.
I’m proud of my accomplishments, but I feel like they don’t give justice to the person I really am.
I was in the news every week for my athletics, but would have much rather had my teammates
be in the spotlight and worked to make that happen. I was very well known in high school, but
my real roots stem from being an unsocial nerd in middle and elementary school who was known
as the math guy. I am rooming with two friends that I have grown up with in the church since we
were toddlers. I have participated in many youth events and mission trips, but have recently been
attending a small Baptist church with what was my longtime girlfriend. We’re still friends, but
didn’t want the stress involved with me being in college and her still a junior in high school. I love
going to both churches and hope to find a good one to attend here in Charlotte.
My favorite activities to do in my free time? That would definitely be fishing, golfing, and hiking. I’m very excited that there is a nine dollar par 3 golf course nearby campus! Many nights in high school were spent reeling in a 20-pound catfish or bass fishing in my hometown.
Currently I am an engineering major with a focus on systems, although I may switch to the math department and choose to major in mathematics with a focus on operations research. I’m really looking forward to the freedom involved with being a college student. I hope that I will graduate Charlotte with a bright future ahead of me!
I’m looking forward to this semester!
