“Superman and Me” is about an Indian boy who loved to read books, and because of it, loved to be different. This story follows a well know plot of a kid who grew up in a poor family, falls in love with something that isn’t popular, becomes very good at that something, and the gives back to his community. This plot line is found in many sports stories.

A Reflective Thinker

This reflection shows me reflecting on the article titled "Superman and Me", by Sherman Alexie. I reflected on the plot that is seen in many underdog stories. I also reflected on the fact that everyone should strive for knowledge. To gain to knowledge is to live.

Reflection

I found it very interesting that Sherman was considered an oddity instead of a prodigy growing up. This line speaks to the difference in cultures between whites and Indians at the time. Sherman didn’t like the notion that Indians shouldn’t be book smart, and after many years of reading and writing, started changing this sterotype by making guest appearances at schools. With our world growing more technologically advanced and smarter each day, I find truth in Sherman’s statement of trying to save the lives of Indian’s. Knowledge is life.
